Physio Lab Session: Quick Introduction to Photosynthesis for LiCOR 6400XT Assimilation Measurement

Delivered on: 5 JANUARY 2022

The LI-6400XT is a gas exchange system that computes photosynthesis and from differences in CO2 and H2O between in-chamber conditions and pre-chamber conditions. This system provides laboratory quality measurements in a field-portable system.

Photosynthesis, the process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in green plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.

It would be impossible to overestimate the importance of photosynthesis in the maintenance of life on Earth. If photosynthesis ceased, there would soon be little food or other organic matter on Earth.

Photo reactions happens in the thylakoid membrane and lumen, yielding oxygen, NADPH and ATP

Synthesis reactions also known as Calvin cycle use ATP and NADPH from the photo reactions to fix CO2 (assimilation), reduce to 3-carbon compound sugar then regenerate the 5-Carbon Ribulose bisphosphate sugar to be assimilated with CO2.
