Menara Condong Teluk Intan: Malaysia’s Iconic Leaning Tower with Pagoda-like Design

Visited on: 17 NOVEMBER 2022

Discover the fascinating Menara Condong (Leaning Tower) of Teluk Intan, an architectural marvel and historical icon in Malaysia. Resembling a pagoda, this unique leaning tower stands as a testament to the ingenuity and rich cultural heritage of Teluk Intan.

The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan was built in 1885 by a local contractor, Leong Choon Chong. Initially, the tower housed a water tank that supplied water to the town and served as a reserve during droughts and fires. Beyond its utility, it also functioned as a timekeeper and a beacon to guide ships navigating to Telok Anson Port.

The structure has drawn frequent comparisons to the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. However, this Malaysian landmark stands at 25 meters with 110 steps, significantly shorter than the Pisa tower, which measures 55 meters.

Architectural Features:

  • Designed in a pagoda style, the tower appears to have eight stories, but it is actually only three stories high.

  • Built using wood and brick, the base diameter measures 13 meters, narrowing to 8.2 meters at the top.

  • The leaning effect adds to its charm and uniqueness, making it an iconic attraction in Malaysia.

In 1894, a chiming clock was installed in the tower. This clock, crafted by J.W. Benson-Ludgathy of London, remains a functional feature to this day. Currently, the tower primarily serves as a clock tower and stands as a proud symbol of Teluk Intan’s heritage.

Benson-Ludgathy. Kini, Menara Condong Teluk Intan hanya berfungsi sebagai menara jam dan menjadi simbol warisan kebanggaan Teluk Intan.

📍 What Makes It Special?

  • Leaning Design: Known for its noticeable tilt, this tower draws comparisons to Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa.

  • Pagoda-Inspired Architecture: Its design mimics traditional Chinese pagodas, making it a rare and striking structure in Malaysia.

  • Rich History: Originally built in 1885 as a water tower, it has since become a popular tourist attraction and symbol of Teluk Intan.
