Inside a Walnut: Serial Face-Microtomy (SF-M) Picture Stack and 3D Reconstruction of a Walnut

This video presents a fascinating 3D reconstruction of walnut (Juglans regia) development, created from a stack of images captured using Serial Face-Microtomy (SF-M). Witness the dramatic changes in the walnut's internal and external structure.

The most significant increase in weight and size occurs between WAC 6 and 10, a period of rapid growth where the walnut's weight increases a remarkable 27 times!

The 3D reconstruction, shown as a time-lapse, reveals the intricate development of the shell and kernel. Observe how the initially small embryo expands rapidly within the pre-formed cavity (locule) of the shell, eventually filling the entire space. The video also highlights the drastic increase in shell volume during this critical period.
